Short description: We are in the midst of an unprecedented global “crisis of care”, for both people and the planet. Yet, the role of markets and consumerism in perpetuating this crisis is little understood. I examine the effects of the marketization of care across different scales or pillars of care provision: households, communities, and states. I argue that the increasing marketization of care across theses scales is beset with problematic logics and contradictions that offer little in the way of addressing this crisis. At the same time, however, markets are here to stay – what is to be done?
